How To Handle Your Bad Mood

I woke up in a funk last week. I knew it from the moment my eyes opened and the first thing I saw was my husband had all of the covers on his side of the bed and he was cocooned around them instead of under them and I was freezing. I knew it because the first thing I thought that day was “asshole.” I realized it further when my coffee spilled everywhere, and I dropped the wet grinds all over the countertop.

I knew it from the very moment I turned on my phone and it proceeded to die, and when my mother called me to tell me her computer had crashed. Followed by a phone call from a family member with a horrific story, and a text from a friend about her hardships too. Throw in the sick child and unexpected bill, and my day was off to a fabulous start.

The day had gone from slightly annoying to frustrating to downright irritating, and my mood was 100% on track with that.

I remember being in the midst of this day and thinking, “I’m watching my own train wreck right now.”It was so much like watching a car hurtle into the intersection at top speed and you can’t do a damn thing to stop it. The momentum was too much to even begin to try. Logically, I knew this car was going to crash. Emotionally, I couldn’t stop it.

It’s hard to stop a vehicle moving at 80 mphwithout a proper braking system, and it’s even harder to stop a human vibrational pattern that has so much momentum. For the sake of teaching you that you have a built in brake system, let’s evaluate my bad day, a little bit:

  • I woke up to find my blankets commandeered. The reality? I had gone to bed the night before thinking and stressing about a big project, and since our vibration when we wake is a continuation of the vibration we feel when we fall asleep? I was doomed the moment I drifted off in a stressed out space. The reality is that my husband steals the blankets EVERY night, and this morning was no different. My vibration and my stress was simply causing me to SEE it differently on this day. Not only did I have a low frequency vibration going, but I chose to focus on this “blanket offense” and start the momentum of that frequency throughout my day. Law of Attraction states that like attracts like, so had I been looking at this objectively, it should have been no surprise that the events following were getting progressively worse.
  • My coffee spilled on the counter and the coffee grinds flew all over my kitchen. My head was in such a space of irritation at this point and the day had barely begun. This is 5:05 a.m., right? I had quite the low vibe momentum rolling at 5am.

The Universe brings us experiences, situations and circumstances that ride on the same vibration we are currently on, so it’s no surprise that when I turned on my phone, it glitched and burnt out. It’s no surprise that I found myself in that experience and situation because the Universe was literally just responding to what I was putting out there. “You want to ride that low vibe frequency? Here, have some more things that will keep you there.”

Enter the phone calls and texts from my friends. Enter a sick child and that unexpected financial expense. The Universe was doing its job and I was not so happily a participant who didn’t realize until it was way too late that I could get myself out of it.

Have you ever had a friend who is in a perpetually bad mood? They are a “glass half empty” mindset, nothing ever goes their way, they never win the raffle basket and life is out to get them at every turn. Nothing is ever their fault and they are the victim 100% of the time. Life is happening TO them. Always.

Think about the vibration they are putting out into the world. It’s low vibe. It’s not expecting anything to go right. It’s anticipating losing and “bad luck.” It’s not surprised when someone is late, or doesn’t meet their expectations. Their vibration is a downright Debbie Downer.

So, it’s no surprise that nothing changes for them. Their vibration is attracting more of the same, right? What we put out, we get back.So if we are putting out the expectation of bad luck, losing or being taken advantage of, the Universe is only doing it’s job when it brings you more of the same.

In my bad day, I was putting out frustration, irritation, anger and impatience. I ended up allowing my experience to be filled with negative events, and ultimately perpetuated my bad day. Now, the question is this:

Would those things have happened if my vibration was higher?

To an extent, yes, that is what I’m saying. Would I have spilled the coffee? Probably not — I was rushing around angry in the kitchen. Would my phone have died? Probably. Yep. It would have died. But if I was riding a higher vibration, I would have seen that the simple fix was to turn it off and on. But in my anger, I ended up at the Apple store where a cute millennial did that for me. Would I have received that phone call from a family member? Of course. But instead of commiserating with her, I would have been a little more high vibe and directed the conversation into a more optimistic place — maybe even shifting the direction of her entire day. Would my child have been sick? Yep. But I would have reacted from compassion in a high vibe space instead of irritation that my work day was interrupted.

Do you see how your vibe doesn’t STOP things from happening to you, it just changes the way you view them. That saying, “Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change” is 100% true. You can take a negative person and a high vibe person and put them in the same situation and they will view it very differently. It’s the same for you and your day. It’s the distinction between you being a victim of the things that are happening to you or an advocate for seeing them as an opportunity to fine tune your vibration.

So, how do we pull ourselves out of the train wreck when we know logically we are headed down a very accident prone path? There are only 3 options here:

  1. Accept the fact that you’re on a bad day kind of path and say to yourself, “I’m just going to ride this out. This too shall pass.”Give yourself permission to just be there and wait until the emotion fizzles out. Truthfully, this is not my favorite option because it feels too passive for me. I’m more action oriented.
  2. Take time and meditate for 20 minutes.By meditating for 20 minutes, you allow your thoughts to stop moving at such a rapidly low vibe speed. You literally interrupt and stop your point of attraction and it pulls the breaks on your negative mood. 20 minutes in meditation 2–3 times a day is amazing for keeping yourself and your vibration high and moving that momentum in a more positive direction.
  3. When all else fails and you can’t just ride it out, and you don’t want to meditate because you can’t stop your thoughts, TAKE A NAP.Sleeping stops all thought and stops your point of attraction too, but there’s a hitch to this: you have to be able to drift off thinking of something positive. If you take a nap in a stressed mood, you’ll wake up in a stressed mood. So here’s the trick: as you are lying there ready to snooze off into napville, think of something that feels good. The blanket covering you, the way the pillow feels under your head, the smell of your lotion, the sound of the fan — focus your attention on something that is comforting to you. Drift off to sleep focusing your attention on something that makes you feel safe, good or happy. You will wake up feeling the way you fell asleep and your point of attraction will be shifted and the momentum moving in the other direction.

Society as we know it likes to assign blame, but if we can just learn the simple concept that our thoughts control our reality, we will be so much better off. The situations may be the same, but the way you will see them will change. If you can learn to look at things through a more positive and high vibe lens, more opportunities will arise, more situations will creep up that will push you further along your path, and ultimately your life will be moving in a more abundant direction.

Cheers to more good days than bad.
